Life span: Varies between sub species. Usually the larger the more long lived, though almost always goes into the span of millennia.

Language: The language of dragons is as ancient as could be and therefor has inherent magical properties woven into its works. Of course each subspecies or location has its own dialect though at its core they are all the same. When a dragon speaks in dragon form it can be a combination of verbal as well as mental. For this reason the depth and meaning of the language has taken on a rather tedious nature. Often times when direct translations are made, a single adjective could amount to be a full sentence or even paragraph even though the original word was only a few syllables. An example of a translation would be something like 'the pearly-sky-blue-feathers of the jewel-like-sweet-singing-Milar-bird-' when the word used to describe the item was Exirgathn. When spoken in dragon form the image would be conveyed well enough, almost as if a mental picture had been painted. In human or other forms this effect is not present unless speaking to another familiar with the language that would already understand the meaning. Otherwise Common is a better choice of communication. When others hear draconic being spoken by a dragon in true form they will not be able to understand, but perhaps catch the 'gist' of it from time to time thanks to the deep and almost artistic nature of the words even though the physical sounds can be quite harsh on the ears.

Names: As the language is steeped in magic its self, often times words -are- spells. And in the case of names it is almost more than true. A parent dragon will name their baby a given name that describes their essence and truest idea. This name is kept very private for if someone knows it and knows ways to use it, it can be very dangerous for the dragon. Names also change as the dragon grows through the ages, as their core and essence is sure to mature and evolve. Parent dragons can continue to keep this name up to date or even the dragon themselves might decide to take over. Once in a while, if a purely honest name is desired, they might seek out one of a few specially gifted dragons who have particular command over the words and can use them as powerful or frighteningly subtle spells. The Speaker would be able to asses the perfect assimilation of words to describe one. It gives a particular sense of wholeness, but also can be an even stronger weapon if put into the wrong hands.

Slumber: Due to their long lifespans dragons live through millennia of world changes. Seeing landscapes and races morph and develop. Loosing those close to them and even seeing family or their own children pass before them. It can be a fascinating journey but it can become tiresome or heavy over time and sometimes it may become a bit much and they simply need a rest. Very rarely is this pre-meditated and comes on so naturally that the dragon might only just sense that he or she is depressed or very, very tired. Once they do slip into Slumber, the amount of time they stay there varies from dragon to dragon. Though considering its purpose, it usually lasts no shorter than a few decades if not a millennia or two. As soon as they fall asleep they are completely cut off from the outside world, a barrier of their energy erecting around them. Sometimes its thought that the dragon might pick up snippets of things said outside but the truth of that is unclear. The barrier its self is nearly impenetrable. It will deflect almost all attacks or attempts to break through save for those that are executed by rarely strong individuals, and the dragons that are awoken like this can suffer sever brain and emotional damage. For this reason Slumber is considered rather sacred by almost all sub species. The only safe way to wake a dragon from this state is a small ritual that includes their real name and it must be spoke by another dragon. To perform this though is sacrilegious and is always severely punished.

Shape Shifting: All dragons are magical to some extent. They will always have a measure of control over their sub species' associated element or affinity, and the ability to shift shapes. In all but a few circumstances, a dragon has the ability to assume -one- other form. Most choose something humanoid for reasons of being able to more easily interact with the world's inhabitants. Some choose animal like shapes though. For the most part they have control over how the initial shaping goes, and the shape matures along with their natural bodies. One thing that is always constant no matter what form they take is their horns. Those will always be present, be it upon the head of a human or in addition to a buck deer's antlers etc. Wings, if their natural forms have them, can also be added or hidden to these forms. In rare cases, if an older dragon is particularly skilled in actual magic, they might be able to assume a third shape though usually it is not very different from their other or their natural form.

Scales: The scales of a dragon hold a little of their magic in them. If one comes into possession of one they will be able to use it to either augment a spell of their own with the affiliated element or even cast from the scale if they know how. They are used up rather quickly though.

Horns: All dragons have horns. They are born with two small nubs that will grow into their full, main set over time. Once they reach their 'teen' years, they will start to develop a second, smaller pair. Then at adulthood a third. The second and third pairs will remain relatively small. Once they reach status of Elder, either the main horns will grow larger, perhaps the smaller sets, or even in some sub species yet another set will come in.

Reproduction- Female: Female dragons become fertile around their early 'teen' years of development (the actual age range depends on the sub species' over all age achievable). Whatever form they were in when they conceived, their child will be born in the manner that form does in nature. Example: If in human form, then the child will go through gestation similar to that of a human though probably will last longer than nine months. It will also be born in that shape. If in dragon form, then an egg will be laid and a baby dragon will hatch from it much later. The form they are born in usually effects the second shape shift the baby will be able to assume, though not always. It is very rare for dragons to have more than one child at a time even when in the shape of something that might have many at a time normally.

Reproduction-Male: Males awaken in their maturity for reproduction a bit earlier than females. However, due to their long life spans their drive is significantly different. Shorter lived creatures have almost constant drive as their life spans allow for less time to create offspring (the essential purpose of all life). Dragons on the other hand have eons in comparison. To be hounded by desires like that for every day for millennia would send any sane dragon into Slumber at an early age, especially if they do not have a mate at thr time.mSo as a evolutionary progression, all male dragons have developed a much lessened drive. Or rather, their drive stops if it is not being used. It is known as Dormancy. During dormant times male dragons will not feel the need for anything sexual and will not even emit pheromones. However, when the Dormancy is ended for whatever reason, the hormones will activate right away again. When this happens it usually is a rather tough transition for the dragon more so depending on the length of Dormancy. The sudden flush of hormones and pheromones will often change their usual behavioral patterns quite drastically for a while until they are able to readjust. Usually this shows as overly feral, dominant, possessive, and masculine displays even if it is uncharacteristic of the dragon.

Elder: The stage after Adulthood is known as being an Elder. As mentioned before, a slight change in horns takes place. Their reproduction functions come to a stop, and their powers also increase.

I've been meaning to do this for a long time. Of course I would love to make fancy pictures and layouts... And maybe someday I might.. But for now text will have to suffice.

now.. This information is how -I- play and write my dragons. The information is broad and applies to all sub species save for a few variants. All sub species will have their own special quirks, cultures and racial traits and affinities.
Anyone is allowed to use these racial rules for their own dragons, but it is in no way a requirement. One of the best things about SoC is how open the world is. These are sentient dragons, you can have non sentient mount like ones, a combination of both or something completely else~
